Ah! Megamisama!/Oh! My Goddess!/Ah! My Goddess!
A trip into the world of College, Cars, Raceing, and the fairer sex... Oh yeah.. The fairer sex happens to be Divine.

If you are looking for a good Romance story then come this way.. want a story with good Motor Tech stuff? Check this out.. want to see a down on his luck, hapless student of Nekomi tech to get his wish granted by a lovely goddess? Then checkout Ah! My Goddess! based on the manga by Kosuke Fujishima

I enjoy the works of Kosuke Fujishima. From Hana Yori Dango (You're Under Arrest) to AMG, he always has an uncanny wit with an accurate attention to mechanical detail.. but also manages to keep in touch with his and the viewers' emotions, but he does it in an odd way.

Imagine that being a goddess is not so much a state of being immortal.. but as a Job.. now imagine that all the Gods and Goddess are based on Norse Mythos... now imagine that the world is run by a Giant Computer called Yggsdrassil and the Ultimate one is indeed.. Odin (though the other Norns do not make an appearance) Now these Gods and Goddess are sent to Earth to help those who have been chosen to receive a favor from the gods.. in the form of wishes (one per person). Thus enter Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld, or for those of you with Norse Mythos in your blood.. Verithendy, Urdu, and Skuld. Bell and her two sisters (by same father, different mother) are the Three Fates... Belldandy, 18, Goddess of Present and Nature.. Urd..20ish, Goddess of the past and likens herself to Cupid, and Skuld..12-13 the precocious Tech fetish Goddess of the Future.

Though more or less Computer technicians than goddesses (the world is a program written by Microsoft.. er Odin I mean). Ah! My Goddess! keeps the viewer watching even though by the middle of the first episode you know that Keiichi and Belldandy are destined to be with each other. Keiichi with his terminal self doubting and Belldandy with her "Kasumi"-esque Naiveté and "everything will work out" attitude simply work well together. Most Male Otaku I know can Identify with Keiichi on the level that women seem to be out of reach for what ever reason. The Female Otaku seems to enjoy it for its endless bounty of sweetness and almost picture perfect relationship. Plus.. Urd and Skuld provide an endless bounty of humor. By the end of it you are rooting for Keiichi and Belldandy to succeed in the struggle against the glitch in the Yggsdrassil system.

It starts out simply enough with Keiichi dialing the best wrong number in the world while trying to get some lunch delivered to him... Down on his luck Keiichi, dog to his upperclassmen and member of Nekomi-tech's Motor club, has been chosen to get one wish. So Belldandy tells him after she pops out of the mirror.. Keiichi thinking it is a prank.. makes the most outlandish wish he can think of.. he wishes for the beautiful Belldandy to stay with him forever. The wish gets approved (if only Odin would grant my wishes so easily) and Belldandy stays with him.. of course he lives in the All men’s dorm. So he gets thrown out.. at which point.. the "Ultimate Force" goes to work to keep them together,, since they are now bound by contract. They find a temple to live in after a rainstorm and Bell falls asleep.. worn from using her powers.. K1 thinks she is sick.. and does his best but gets a fever...

In Episode two.. Megumi (K1's little sister) discusses a vacation to the Ocean and K1 says he cannot afford it.. but decides to do it anyway.. he gets a Tape in the mail.. it is Urd transporting her self. She tells him to make a move... or ELSE. Belldandy wants him she says.. so the episode plays out at the beach and Urd is kicked out of heaven so is stuck living with K1 and Bell until further notice.

Episode three has a big race and announces the arrival of Skuld.. who unlike Urd.. hates the idea of Bell being on earth with a mortal. She tries to sabotage the race... and Aoshima proves to be a jerk.

Episodes 4 and 5 get to the meat of the story and involve a Bug exhaust port, a recall notice for Belldandy, and very moving scenes. I will not go into them as I do not want to ruin it.

There are a few drawbacks to the series over the Manga. The first of which is that the OVA is too damn short. Only five episodes in total length. Hardly enough time to explore some of the finer points in their lives together. Infact between episodes 1 and 2.. about 5 months go by and they barely mention anything other than K1 and Bell-chan got closer together and that Megumi came over to visit a lot.

Another problem aside from length was they did not include Benpei (Skuld's little ceramic Robot), Mara (Demon, 1st class, Category 2, Unlimited), Chihiri (Owner of a Parts shop, love interest for the two leaders of the Auto Club), or do much of anything with the other members of the motor club. Sadly.. Hasegawa gets maybe a few minutes total screen time, as well as Tamiya and Ootaki.. but those two are so odd maybe it is a good thing. Sayoko's hatred of Bell-chan is hardly explained, and Aoshima is likewise an enigma. Basically folks.. what I am saying is this just a quick run down of the relationship of K1 and Bell-chan .. and not the story from the Manga (which this Otaku collects and enjoys reading). Too many characters are absent.. including Peorth.. the Earth Goddess sent to grant Keiichi's deepest (sexual) desires.

I attribute the leaving out of these fun characters to the lack of time that five 30 minute episodes allow. Had they done a full 13 or 26 episode stint, the show could have gone more in depth and been closer to the manga.. as well as done away with the.. although cute and cosmically beautiful.. romantic reinventiveness with childhood memories thing in episodes 4 and 5. But still.. the show is well done, and very, very sweet. As Urd and Skuld pick up the comedic slack with their odd banter, Belldandy tries to make everything perfect, and Keiichi ponders how he came to be so "blessed" to have three goddesses living with him.

I give it 8 out of 10 boxes of Pocky (I ate the other two while writing this review)
